The Climate Innovation District in Leeds is a transformational project as part of a new neighbourhood in the Hunslet Riverside area of South Bank. It creates 955 family homes and apartments, alongside a multigenerational building incorporating a primary school, a care home and a nursery, offices, cafes, restaurants, and outdoor sports facilities. Being designed and built to key passivhaus principles means these properties are very well insulated and airtight. All the properties are also linked up to a site-wide photovoltaic (PV) installation, so all properties share in the generation of electricity on site.

The innovative NUOS Plus Wi-Fi water heaters will be installed in all of the larger residential properties. CITU uses a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit to keep the internal air fresh, but warm. The air source heat pump (ASHP) in the NUOS Plus Wi-Fi is used to heat the integrated hot water cylinder for the property, so hot water for baths and showers is heated using the air outside, and boosted by electricity as required.

The cylinder in the NUOS Plus Wif-Fi air source heat pump is large enough to support a family home, and the ventilation needs for it can coordinate with those needed for the mechanical ventilation heat recovery system. We have installed these in several homes now and they are fit for purpose so we will continue to install them in the Climate Innovation District.
