What does a heat pump's COP mean?
COP stands for Coefficient of Performance which is a way of expressing the efficiency of a heat pump. COP is a ratio of the useful heating provided versus the work (or energy) used to create it. The higher the COP number the more efficient the heat pump is and the less energy it will use to operate (meaning lower energy bills). Most heat pumps have a COP rating of between 2.5 and 4.

What is a heat pump?
Heat pumps use the same technology as the everyday fridge-freezer, only reversed! A heat pump works very much like a household fridge-freezer but in reverse! Essentially, the heat pump draws in warmth from the air outside a home and transfers it to a refrigerant gas which is then compressed. This compression increases the temperature considerably before the refrigerant gas transfers it’s heat to water inside a tank which in turn can be used to heat your home and hot water.
Air source heat pumps vs. Ground source heat pumps
The most common types of heat pumps are air-source, as opposed to ground-source. In air-source heat pumps, heat is extracted from the outside air and is used to provide heat for radiators or a domestic hot water tank. Air source heat pumps are easy to install, more space efficient compared to their ground source counterparts. All Ariston heat pumps are air source systems and can efficiently extract heat from air as cold as -10.C.
