Hydrogen,
the future starts
now

en logo ready As part of its continuous commitment to deliver comfort solutions, Ariston is proud to announce the upcoming release of ONE+ NET Series- its first range of condensing boilers certified to operate on 20% hydrogen blend.

Launched in July 2022, the new 20% hydrogen-ready boilers represent a first important step in our ongoing pledge to hydrogen for heating, supporting our multi-technology and multi-vector approach.

The role of hydrogen in the energy transition

The world is in the midst of a critical energy security and environmental crisis, with the urgency to find sustainable and scalable energy sources expanding by the day. As one of the leading options for decarbonising our economy, hydrogen can help address a variety of critical energy challenges. When hydrogen is obtained from renewable sources, so called green hydrogen, the combustion process is completely climate-neutral and has zero CO2 emissions. As a result, hydrogen represents a key enabler for decarbonisation of multiple segments of the economy where substantial emission reductions are proving challenging.

There is no doubt that clean hydrogen is gaining unparalleled political and corporate impetus and increasingly becoming a common topic of discussion in mainstream energy talks. In the next few years, more than 350 large-scale hydrogen projects will be deployed at a global level, receiving $500 billion in public and private funding by 20301

The European Context

In European countries, heating and cooling represent the largest end-use of energy. The reduction of energy consumption by 18% in the residential sector will be essential to meet the net-zero target by 20502. Green hydrogen is considered key to attaining the EU Green Deal goals.

According to the IEA's Roadmap to net-zero by 2050, all new buildings must embed carbon-free heating, cooling and plumbing infrastructure by 20303. At the same time, 50% of existing buildings must be retrofitted to net-zero-carbon-ready levels by 2040, reaching 85% by 2050.

Today, clean hydrogen accounts for 2% of the EU's energy consumption, and the European Commission aims to increase it by sevenfold by 20504. In this context, the European Hydrogen Strategy was adopted in July 2020 as a milestone to promote large-scale adoption of hydrogen in the energy sector and to build the necessary regulatory framework for all EU countries. The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance has been established to guide investments in that direction. Furthermore, hydrogen and other green gases such as biomethane have been identified by the European Commission as key tools to possibly replace fossil fuels and fast-forward Europe's energy transition. The REPowerEU communication sets a target of 10 million tons of domestic renewable hydrogen production and 10 million tons of imports by 20305

Our pledge to Hydrogen

As a member of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, over the last few years the Ariston Group has been investing in hydrogen research and development.

Available from July 2022, ONE+ NET Series is Ariston’s first wall-hung condensing boiler range certified by DVGW for gas mixtures with up to 20% hydrogen. Ariston ONE+ Net range operates seamlessly without compromising security, reliability and efficiency with a vector composed by up to 20% volume of hydrogen and the remaining volume percentage of natural gas (e.g. for 1 m2 of energy vector, 20% volume is hydrogen and 80% volume is natural gas).

This range boasts a state-of-the-art Ignition Control System+ and can automatically adjust to possible changing vector compositions up to 20% hydrogen*. This provides consumers with a future-proof solution that maintains the same high-performance standards

The establishment of a Hydrogen House Lab in Osimo underlines Ariston’s ongoing commitment to hydrogen. We have been conducting numerous research projects and one of the first steps being the successful production of hydrogen. Moreover, our engineers are currently developing a new boiler capable of running on 100% hydrogen with the aim of being part of real-world pilot projects.
