Hot Water Supply: Maintenance and Control

modified: July 26, 2023

If you have trouble with your hot water supply, don't worry! Below you will find a guide for simple and efficient solutions.

Where does your hot water supply come from?

Today, different types of technologies deliver hot water to our homes. Whether hybrid, gasoline, or electric, their main purpose is to provide hot water.

According to your solution, the appliance's maintenance and the solution to fix your lack of hot water supply will be different. Nonetheless, an important general rule to keep in mind when this inconvenience occurs is that there may be various problems or issues to verify. Let’s take a better look at where the issues may be coming from.

Isolating the source of your hot water supply

Before going into the details to solve the problem, it is important to isolate the power source from your hot water device.

If it is a gas boiler, you need to check whether your gas boiler is connected to its power outlet. An additional check is to verify that an adequate amount of fuel is being delivered to the tank or storage tank it is equipped with. In the case of an electric hot water storage system, similar to the gas boiler, the first step is to verify that the outlet is connected and working properly.

If none of these is malfunctioning, it may be the water supply itself. Verify that there is enough water in the tank and ensure that it fills properly. In addition to the amount of water, also check whether the water pressure is at the right level and whether it reaches the temperature it is supposed to reach. This may be a common reason for your lack of hot water supply, and fixing it simply involves resetting the temperature.

Checking the pipes on your boiler

Once you have confirmed that the energy source of your hot water is functioning correctly, you can proceed to check the pipes and mechanics of your device.

For the gas boiler, a common problem with the lack of hot water supply can be found in the pipes. A basic malfunction can be caused by freezing pipes when it is very cold outside. The solution would be to pour hot water in order to "warm it up" over the pipe that froze. Another problem could also be inside the pipe, since the air bubbles can create inside it and, therefore, create a block for the water to pass through. If this is the case, the solution is to drain the pipes; both from the water and the air build-up. In all cases, a recommended solution to the pipe problems is to call a technician who is trained and knowledgeable about these kinds of issues.

Did you check your hot water timer?

Perhaps an obvious check, but one that can also slip your mind when you're trying to figure out your hot water supply problem, is to check your device's timer. Seeing how homeowners are usually inclined to set the timer on their boiler for the machine to start heating the water in the mornings and/or evenings, it could simply be that the timer on the boiler is not working!

One of the reasons could be that your boiler clock has not updated with the time change. Another might be a recent power failure that misaligned the timer with the parameters you had programmed and needs to be reset. A third possibility could be that the timer is faulty and is what is impeding a stable hot water supply. In any event, this bad communication between the boiler and the timer could be what is causing the problem.

A service that you are not too concerned about until it is missing, your hot water supply can make or break your days; especially if you need it in the morning before work. With so many different technologies available to us, a bit of general advice to maintain well-oiled machines is to organize regular checkups and call on technicians when there are problems to solve.

By taking these simple steps, we hope you don't have to face a sudden interruption of your hot water supply!
