Boiler replacement - How to go about it?

WHY REPLACE YOUR BOILER?

Heating accounts for about 60 per cent of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference.
In the last years, heating technology has made great improvements to increase efficiency and performances (consumption, noise, emission, ease of use).
In addition, regulations have become ever more stringent.
For these reasons, replacing boilers with many years of age (even if fully functional) can be very suitable: a new boiler allows a considerable saving in the bill, a higher comfort and a much greater easiness of use.

WHY REPLACE YOUR BOILER?

CONDENSING BOILER

Condensing boilers are the most efficient boilers. The peculiarity of condensing technology is that it could provide, for the same fuel consumption, a greater amount of heat than a conventional one. This means no waste of energy thanks to this super-efficient technology.

3 reasons for choosing the condensing boiler

  • ensures a significant saving of fuel, from 10% to 30%, depending on the type of system compared to a conventional equipment
  • comes with an advanced range of temperature control systems that provide maximum environmental comfort and energy savings
  • guarantees a high efficiency and is class 5 with reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO)

What should I consider when replacing my boiler?

If it is time to change your boiler, you need to decide what type of heating system is right for you. Here are some things to consider:

SOURCE OF ENERGY

If you have mains gas, a gas boiler is likely to be the cheapest heating option. Historically oil heating has been more expensive.
If you don’t have a gas supply to your home, it might be worth considering a form of low carbon heating such as heat pumps. With the renewable heat incentive, these may be cheaper overall.
This technology allows even greater efficiency (the Ariston heat pumps are energy class A ++, the best existing); assuring saving of money and care for the environment (in fact lower consumption are equivalent to lower CO2 emissions).
Alternatively, one may want to get a gas connection to your home. The company that owns and operates the gas network in your area may be able to help with the cost of getting a new connection, and it may even be fully funded.

SPACE IN YOUR HOME

There are boilers suitable for each type of requirement, according with the space available in your home. The most common ones are wall hung boilers, simple and compact, to be installed inside the houses.

BOILER TYPE AND HOT WATER USAGE

BOILER TYPE AND HOT WATER USAGE

There are different boiler types, depending on your hot water usage and the space in your home:

Combi boilers: Boiler for heating and water heating
Combi boilers produce hot water directly inside itself. Water is heated instantly, so you can have it in few seconds. The smaller size, linear design and intelligent technology make Ariston’s Combi Boilers suitable for any kind of installation guaranteeing maximum comfort.

Advantages:

  • Ariston’s Combi Boilers are designed to enclose a lot of power in small spaces; no separate hot water cylinder is required. Compact sizes make combi boilers perfect for smaller properties;
  • Less pipework in the home makes installation typically cheaper

System boilers: Boiler for only heating
System boilers require a cylinder for storing hot water; This is ideal for homes with more than one bathroom

Advantages:

  • You can get hot water from multiple taps at the same time.
  • These boilers are also compatible with solar water heating systems, which deliver environmental benefits as well as lower energy bills (link).

Regular boilers

Regular boilers (sometimes known as open vent or heat only boilers) are ideally suited to homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system which is linked to a separate hot water cylinder. These boilers also need a cold-water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder as well as a tank that maintains the water level of the central heating system.

Advantages:

  • Perfect for homes where a lot of hot water is used at the same time
  • Ideal where there are two or more bathrooms
  • A good option in areas where water pressure is low
  • Compatible with solar water heating systems for a lower carbon footprint and lower energy costs

EASINESS TO FIND AN INSTALLER

You can find the registered list of Ariston Boilers installers by clicking here.
It’s worth getting three quotes from different installers, and you may also want to check that installers:

  • have a local office
  • have been in business locally for several years
  • have customer references that you can review.

Your registered installer will ensure that your system complies with current building regulations, and will make sure you get all the documentation to prove this. Keep these documents safe; you will need them when you sell the property.
